Kostinbrod

Kostinbrod (Bulgarian: Костинброд [ˈkɔstinbrot]) is a town in western Bulgaria. It is the seat of Kostinbrod Municipality. It is located 15 km west of the capital city of Sofia. It is located on two important transport corridors: Lom — Sofia — Thessaloniki and Sofia — Belgrade.

Important History

According to the legends, the town was founded by a certain Georgi, who settled near the crossing (brod) of the Belitsa, thus giving the name to the town (Kostinbrod means "Georgi's ford"). There he opened a pub that became popular among the merchants arriving in the capital, some of them settling and organizing a village, whose centre of the time is now located west of the road between Sofia and Lom.

Kostinbrod Highlights

In 1973, archeological remains were discovered in the municipality, which include the Skretiska road station along the ancient Via Militaris line (passing from Belgrade via Serdica to Constantinople) and the late Roman residence built near it, probably called with the same name.

The third and last archeological period is connected with the construction of an early Byzantine fortified settlement Kratiskara on the foundations of the existing residence.

Skretiska is the most significant among the related architectural complexes on today's Bulgarian territory and one of the largest known peristyle complexes in the Roman Empire. .

Climate & Geography

Relief

The rivers Blato, Slivnishka and Belitsa flow through the territory of the municipality. Several small tributaries of the Iskar River spring from Mala Planina. The largest of them is Kriva Reka, which forms short but deep gorges with beautiful rock slopes. There are many caves on the territory of the municipality, the largest of which is the Great Darkness, about 1100 meters long.

Flora & Fauna

In the vicinity of Kostinbrod and the villages of the municipality there are over 40 species of rare and endangered plants. Localities of 3 species of Bulgarian and 23 species of Balkan endemics have been discovered. Fauna is also characterized by great diversity, which is most pronounced among birds.

Climate

The chain-forming fences of Stara Planina have a great influence on the formation of the climate in the region. The Sofia field located in the Western/high/subregion is characterized by prevailing temperate-continental climatic conditions. It is characterized by a well-defined moist shade and the appearance of falling winds from the Balkan Mountains.
  • Kostinbrod is located on two important transport corridors: Lom — Sofia — Thessaloniki and Sofia — Belgrade. The international railway line to Western Europe passes through the Municipality.
  • By decree of the State Council Kostinbrod was declared a town in 1974. It became the administrative center of a settlement system, including 14 settlements.
  • During the Revival, the residents were known as hard-working farmers and pastoralists. In search of a livelihood, many left the Balkan villages, settled in Kostinbrod and worked in Sofia's factories.
